The Story of Habanero Jake

It has been said by those who seem to know, that baby Jake simply appeared one day out of the mist, wearing nothing but a grin and was taken in by a good-hearted couple named George and Marie who lived out in the central prairies.

It was halfway through the last century that Jake showed up, he seemed to know that these folks would not send him away but would accept him for what he was, a good natured little tyke
with some strange habits.

He may not have known at the time but Jake had picked a home full of love and laughter. This was not a wealthy family if you think of money when you think of wealth, but they had more than enough of what was important.

He moved in and was accepted by a big brother who would protect him and show him the ways of life and two sisters that played games and sang songs and helped Jake understand the softer things in life.

When Jake showed up he was around eight months old, walking with a swagger and humming a strange song and the first thing he did was light up one of George's cigarettes and pour himself a good shot of whiskey. This was not taken well by Marie; as such behavior was unacceptable in one so young back in those days. Go figure!

The next strange thing they noticed was that little Jake ate everything he could get his hands on. Any kind of raw vegetable was munched with pleasure, radishes and turnips being his favorite. Jake had to be told over and over that the goldfish were not for eating. He kept pointing at them saying "sushi, sushi, yum, yum!!"

The big Boston fern in the living room was the first to go, Jake said it was "quite exceptional with a touch of Dijon mustard and by the way, could I please have a glass of Merlot?" Most youngsters were picky with food but Jake wanted to try everything. Garlic made him stare off into space with a goofy grin on is chubby little face and George was shocked when he went to answer the door one day and came back to find someone had eaten his sardine and onion sandwich! No one around except baby Jake!!

From the beginning, Jake constantly searched for new tastes to satisfy his cravings. Lox and cream cheese, escargot with balsamic, borscht with dark ale, Peking duck with orange brandy sauce, he tried everything but still something was missing.

Then it happened! When he was five years old, Jake came across some hot sauce. Now we're only talking about a mild Tabasco sauce but everyone was shocked when Jake took a taste and proceeded to pour the whole bottle on his cereal and gobble it up like he hadn't eaten in weeks! My what a smile he had that day!

It wasn't until years later though that Jake discovered what he had been searching for.

After enjoying the new sensations of jalapenos and cayenne, he moved on to all the wondrous chutneys, curry's and chilies that he could find in the local stores and café's.

Jake had become somewhat of oddity, as most people in this neck of the woods were your basic "meat and potato" types.

Then it happened! Jake was trying out a burrito at a new Mexican restaurant when his hand reached out and grabbed a bottle of sauce he had never seen before. Habanero!!! One taste and Jake new his search was over! He had finally found the wondrous flavor and heat that he had been craving!! Jake was soon the talk of the town and a sort of "celebrity" as he munched down anything you put in front of him as long as it was covered with sauce made from the hottest pepper on earth!

The legend of Habanero Jake was born and years later the perfect job came along for Jake.
